Saturday, May 22, 1999 marked the kick-off celebration of the 25th
anniversary of the bond issue that financed the purchase of the first 1800
acres of Walnut Creek's open space and the 100-year celebration of the old
Borges Ranch, located at the base of Mount Diablo. The Walnut Creek Open Space
Foundation sponsored the event. Brenda DeLa Ossa of the 25th Anniversary
Committee contacted MDSHS member Keith Nofield, inviting MDSHS to attend this
first of many Walnut Creek Open Space events planned for this year. This
two-hour event, which started at 10:00am, was a special event for MDSHS as only a
few select organizations were invited to attend. Harold (Hal) Davis and I,
represented MDSHS at this event.
The Walnut Creek Mayor pro tern and City Council members were transported to
the event, located in the gazebo in civic park, by the Wells Fargo Bank's
historical stagecoach. Several hundred members of the public listened to
speakers including an impersonator of Theodore Roosevelt dressed in
period costume.
After the speakers were done talkin, the public was invited to partake in refreshments
of coffee, juice, cookies and bagels while viewing the dozen or so booths
representing a variety of public service groups. Dan Payne, the new MDIA (Mount Diablo
Interpretive Association) Director, introduced himself, and made a donation to
our building fund, Thank you Dan!
